The tongue of a dog is one of the vital organs of its body. Unlike in humans where the organ is mainly used as a tool for sensing taste and eating food, a dog tongue is utilized to carry out several important body functions. The dog uses its tongue to taste and lick up its food and water. For a dog its tongue is a natural tool for grooming itself. It also licks its wounds for healing.

Apart from the above mentioned functions, another very important function of tongue is that it is used for cooling the body. After a session of rigorous physical exercise when the dog starts panting the tongue acts as a natural heat regulator. The short warm breaths of the dog moisten the surface of the tongue. When the long tongue gets laid out of the mouth the moisture vaporizes and cools down the body. The tongue is also used as a tool to show affection for its owner.

Though quite uncommon but, in case the tongue of your dog gets injured you are recommended to take your pet to a good veterinary physician for check.

Healthy Dog Tongue

The tongue of a healthy dog will be pink or moist. Some breeds of dogs have blue black tongue as well. Sometimes mixed breed dogs have spotted tongue as well. Dogs salivate more than humans. So, you will always find the tongue to be heavily moistened.
The tongue surface is not as uniform as humans. Usually the middle part of the tongue is generally found to be having a shredded surface while the other parts have larger sized buds. The variation in the texture of the tongue allows the dog to enjoy variation of taste.

Dog Tongue Diseases

Though a dog’s tongue can hardly get injured, but serious diseases may crop up in case a wounded dog tongue is not properly treated.

When a dog pants the blood flow in the tongue increases so, the tongue of your pet would be heavily bleeding in case it is wounded. The tongue of dogs also gets injured when a dog happens to chew some pieces of wood. The splinters of the chewed wood can get in and cause pain. You may get rid of such wood splinters with the aid of a veterinary physician. The tongue of a dog can also be the victim of skin cancer. You are recommended to take your pet to a vet clinic for routine check up.
