Traveling Physical Therapists and Dogs
Article by Kristi Hennessey
The highways and airways of the world take us to new places. Being a traveling physical therapist, your work often requires you to travel. Stopping and going are the norm for your line of work. But what about your four-legged friend? What is your pup going to do while you are away? You could leave them with a pup-sitter or dog-hotel, but honestly it would make more sense to just bring them with you. They would enjoy your company just as much as you would enjoy theirs. The real question is- can your pup be allowed to travel and stay with you. That’s where you would ask- Why not?
Arrangements
Arranging for you pup to join you on your journey is much simpler than it sounds. If you are new to the traveling therapist line of work, you should consult with several recruiting agencies to ensure that they are tailored to fit your needs. Most will offer an arraignment of benefits for you- such as spouse, children and pet accommodations for your assignments. With the proper recruiter at your service, you and your pup will have no trouble finding suitable locations to stay while you work away from home.
Your Pup and the Road
Here is the tricky part- finding the right way to travel. Not all recruiting services will take care of your travels directly, so it may be up to you to find your own way. There are certain websites online that focus primarily on finding the pet friendly areas. Traveling by air may be a little harder on your pup, so the highway may be a better solution.
A Pup in the City
Your stay is likely going to be for an extended period, so you will want to ensure that the town itself is going to be friendly with your pup. When you receive an assignment, follow up by researching the city and surrounding location.
Depending on your manner of travel- whether you flew, took a bus or used your own vehicle you will need to investigate the city’s transportation. The town should be welcoming of dogs on public transportation such as buses, subways and possibly taxi services.
Check into the cities leash laws and dog regulations. There should not be unreasonable regulations for pups if they are leashed. Make sure that the town itself is going to be welcoming of your pup.
The city should have a wide variety of vets to choose from. This is important as you will be traveling away from your pup’s normal doggy doc. Check into and make prior arrangements to meet a suitable veterinarian for your pup. You don’t want to find yourself in a tight spot if an emergency comes up.
Parks are important. Not just for a bit of time to relax and take in the soothing elements of the world, but you will need to ensure that they are open to the public and ideal for dogs to roam. Playtime is important when you are away from your work and what better time to spend it than with your four-legged friend.
