How To Leash Train Your Puppy Or Dog

How To Leash Train Your Puppy Or Dog

Some dogs are very easy to leash train, while other dogs may take more time to train as they adjust to the process and learn how to properly be led around by their owners. Having a dog that is properly trained to walk with a leash can be very beneficial to a dog owner. Dogs who haven’t been properly leash trained may pull the owner around as if the dog is actually walking the person instead of the person being the one who is walking the dog. This can cause injury to both the person and the dog. As pulling is occurring, the pressure on the dog’s neck can cut off the dog’s breathing and also injure its body. If your dog is very big and strong, then there is also the chance that the dog might unknowingly pull both of you into a dangerous situation, such as traffic.

It is best to leash train a dog when they are still puppies. It can be done when they are older, but things go much smoother when they are younger and more susceptible to accepting the introduction of something that feels very confining to them. First you must get your dog used to wearing a collar. Collars are uncomfortable to dogs when they are not used to wearing them. Therefore, when your dog is first introduced to a collar, they will scratch at it and try to remove it. Once they get used to the feeling of having a collar on them, the behavior will stop and they will no longer try to fight it.

After the dog has become accepting of the collar, then you may move on to leash training. As the dog is going about its normal activities, such as playing, attach the leash to the dog’s collar. The puppy or dog will most likely not immediately take to the leash or behave while on it. Don’t try to force the dog to behave on the leash. Wait until the puppy or dog has seemingly forgotten the fact that a leash is attached to its collar and then remove the leash from the collar. Repeat this process until the dog becomes accepting of the leash and familiar with its presence. Work on training your dog about ten to fifteen minutes at a time. You can do this a few times a day or several times a day.

Food and special doggy treats can be used when you are teaching the dog to walk while on the leash. In the beginning, while the leash is attached to your dog, stand at a distance and then have the dog walk to you. You can offer him or her a treat during this time. A reward will give the dog more motivation to do what you want it to do. After a while, the dog will get used to the prospect of walking on a leash and you will no longer have to give it treats to motivate it to come to you and behave on the leash. Dogs enjoy walks. Therefore, when the dog comes to learn that being on the leash means that it is about to go for a walk, they will actually get excited when they see you with the leash in hand.

While you are leash training a dog, most dogs will try to pull the person. When the dog does this, stand still. This will teach the dog that pulling you will get it nowhere. Never pull on the leash to try to get your dog to behave. This is very bad. You can injure the dog’s sensitive neck. This is also a good reason why the dog must be taught to not pull on the leash either. Some dogs will be easy and quick to train while other dogs will be difficult to leash train. Sometimes a dog owner absolutely cannot train their dog to properly walk on a leash. In cases like this, it is a good idea to hire a professional dog trainer who knows exactly what to do in a situation like this.
