Perhaps the most famous Cat Song is The Siamese Cat Song recorded by Peggy Lee. The song is from the Walt Disney 1955 classic “The Lady and The Tramp”, an animated film about a classy Cocker Spaniel named Lady who falls for Tramp a scamp of a mongrel. The song however is about two arrogant cats, Si and Am, who have given Siamese cats a bad name ever since.

The Siamese Cat Song was penned by Lee along with Sonny Burke and over the years has also been recorded by Freddie and The Dreamers, Mitch Miller, Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, Haylie Duff, and Bobby McFerrin. “We are Siamese if you please, We are Siamese if you don’t please.”

Both The Turtles and Petula Clark stepped into recording studios to make very different versions of The Cat in the Window, a song that compares a cat trying to get out of a window with the singer wanting to fly away. “There’s a cat in the window, and he’s watching all the birds go passing by, he’d love to fly out the window, go where the wind goes, and so would I.”

Who can forget the Muppets recording of The Cat Came Back, a song about a kitty that just kept finding its way back no matter how far it was taken from home. “But the cat came back, she wouldn’t stay away, she was sitting on the porch the very next day.”

In 1950 folks were flooding into record stores and asking for I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat. Mel Blanc recorded the song, written by Alan Livingston, Billy May and Warren Foster, about the cartoon cat and canary duo Sylvester and Tweety. “I tawt I taw a puddy tat a creeping up on me, I did I taw a puddy tat as plain as he could be.”

The Rooftop Singers followed up their 1963 number one hit Walk Right In, with Tom Cat a ditty about ‘Ringtail Tom’ who liked to go “strutting round the town” “And when he steps out all the other cats in the neighborhood they begin to shout.” Fast forward to 1981 and the Stray Cats record a musically different song but with a very similar theme, the rockabilly Stray Cat Strut. “Stray cat strut, I’m a ladies’ cat, a feline Casanova, hey man, that’s where it’s at, get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man, get my dinner from a garbage can.”

Norma Tanega apparently owned a cat that she named ‘Dog’ and liked to take that cat for walks, hence her 1966 hit Walking My Cat Named Dog, which does seem to be about her real life experience of strolling around town with her pet feline.

Most songs though that include the word Cat in the tile, are not truly about cats at all. A great example is the fine song, Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. No cats make an appearance in this song; instead the lyrics contain a very chilling message that every dad should pay heed too.

Bent Fabric, real name Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, had a hit in 1962 with Alley Cat, but this was an instrumental recording so it’s not a song about cats. Instrumental too was Aaron Copeland’s The Cat and the Mouse.

Cat People (Putting Out Fire) by David Bowie was recorded for the 1982 remake of the film Cat People. Great dark and menacing feel to the song but the words have no relationship to cats.

The cat in The Cat Crept In, recorded by Mud was actually a girl, as was the cat featured in The Rolling Stones’ Stray Cat Blues, this one with exceedingly sharp claws.

They Call Her the Cat, by Elton John is about, well it’s not about cats! Neither is Honky Cat, another Elton tune, that one is about a country boy moving to live life in the city.

Three Cool Cats, is a song that was first recorded by the Coasters in 1958 and covered by The Beatles in 1962 (but not released until 1995.) Of course this song is not about cats, but about three teenage boys and three teenage girls. The Beatles also recorded Little Willie John’s Leave My Kitten Alone, no surprise to find that the song is not about a kitten.U2 recorded a song titled An Cat Dubh, which apparently means The Black Cat in Gaelic, no cat in the song though, black or otherwise.

No cats are in Year of the Cat by Al Stewart, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, The Lovecats by The Cure or in Cool for Cats by Squeeze. Who can say what The Cat’s In the Well by Bob Dylan is about?

There must be countless other songs that have the words Cat, or Cats, in the title but are not actually about our feline friends. No doubt there are more songs that are about cats than those listed on this page, but those songs sadly seem few and far between.

But wait… wasn’t there a stage musical all about cats. Cats, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, was first shown in London, England in 1981. Based upon T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats the show features song after song about… Old Gumbie, Grizabella, Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer, Skimbleshanks, Old Deuteronomy, Gus, Macavity, and Mr. Mistoffelees. All of these characters are, of course,… Cats.

Types of Cat Vomit

A hairball is typically one solid piece, it may look like a mouse. If the cat goes outside it may have some grass in it. Often liquid bile is regurgitated along with the hairball.

Food vomit often looks like food, and falls apart easily. There may, or may, not be bile with it.

Other times cats simply vomit bile, a yellow liquid, they may also vomit grass at this time.

In cases where the cat has a heavy infestation of worms, they can even vomit worms.

Hairballs

Hairballs develop when a cat grooms itself and swallows excessive amounts of hair. When too much hair accumulates in the cats stomach it blocks the flow of digestion, so the cats vomit these large blobs of fur out of their system. Brushing will reduce some of the loose hair but feeding a better quality cat food will also lower the occurrence of hairballs because it will improve the health of the cats skin, coat, and digestive system. You may note that there are many “Hairball” formula foods that only deal with digestion, and are low quality so do not otherwise reduce shedding.

Food Vomit

Food vomit can occur for many reasons, the cat eats too fast, eats too much, or the food is hard on the cats stomach and it responds by vomiting. This is more often a problem with dry food – although cats will vomit up rotten canned food (typically they wont eat rotten food). With many low quality dry foods the manufacturer adds fat to give the food flavor. These foods typically contain very little meat, and since cats are carnivores they must eat a lot of the poor quality food to get any nutrition, thus they eat more fat. Fat is hard on their stomachs, and they vomit in response.

Cat Foods that contain a lot of color dyes may result in vomiting when a cat is sensitive to food color allergies. Foods that contain mystery meat, (meat meal) which can be any dead animal, often result in vomiting due to allergies and the fact that the ingredients are not consistent from bag to bag.

When owners make a food change too suddenly this too can result in food vomit.

Very often cats have allergies to ingredients in cat food, corn and beef being some common problem ingredients, where as chicken and lamb are often considered more gentle on a cats tummy. Food allergies also result in cats having itchy skin, and diarrhea.

Food vomit can also occur when a cat is eating a food that is too rich for its stomach, as when a senior cat might eat kitten food.

What is with the Grass in a Cats Vomit?

Cats instinctively chew on grass, or sometimes house plants, to encourage themselves to vomit. This is usually not a problem, unless the home owner has treated the plants with pesticides, or if the cat eats plants that are poisonous to cats. If this type of vomiting occurs frequently (more than once a week) the cat owner should consider taking their pet to the veterinarian for a health check up.

When to take a Vomiting Cat to the Veterinarian

Cats with roundworms may vomit them up. It is important to note that if this happens the cat should be taken to a veterinarian for the proper deworming as they may still have other worms in their system. Over the counter worming products do not kill all types of worms.

Cats that vomit blood require immediate veterinarian attention.

Cats that vomit every few days, and not always right after eating (which would indicate a problem with the food) may have a health concern such as diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, worms, liver disease, or any number of other problems, and should see a veterinarian. This is urgent if they seem to be losing weight.

Cats that keep trying to vomit. If the cat has already thrown up and seems to be retching for a long time afterwards it may have a blockage, or even ingested poison, and should see a veterinarian immediately.

If the cat throws up foul looking matter that resembles feces it may have an intestinal blockage and should see a veterinarian immediately.

Projectile vomit is also a call to see the veterinarian immediately.

If the cat has recently been treated with a flea remedy the cat could be having an allergic reaction to the chemicals used. Over the counter flea remedies have killed many cats and dogs and should be of immediate concern.

Some things to Note

If your cat goes outside it may be at risk for ingesting a poison.

If your cat is not vaccinated it is more likely to get sick.

If your cat has other symptoms it should most definitely see a veterinarian.

Treatments for Food Vomit Problems

When cat vomiting is food related (and therefore does not require veterinarian attention) the best course of action is to remove food for half a day, and slowly reintroduce the food, selecting to change the cat over to a more healthy food (one with chicken, or lamb, as a first ingredient, and a cat food that contains no by-products, meat meal, ethoxyquin, color dyes, or other problem ingredients). Switch by mixing the new food with the old, and at first offer small portions.

Aging Cats – Cat Food Nutrition In The Senior Years

As your kitty ages, cat food nutrition can be important to the quality of her life. In general, your cat will probably live over fifty percent of her life as a senior. So what does this mean in terms of finding the best cat food to keep her healthy?

First off, how do you know when your cat reaches “senior status”? You might see a sprinkling of gray on her chin; a small cloud forming over once-clear eyes. Perhaps there’s a touch of stiffness in what was once a frisky gait. Any of these can be tell-tale signs that your fuzzy feline friend is entering her “golden” years.

The old saying that one year in a cat’s life is equal to seven “human” years isn’t entirely accurate. Pets mature quickly during the first two years of life, level out for their middle years, and then begin to age more rapidly once more during the final third of their life span.

Technically, a cat qualifies as a senior once she’s achieved 7 years of age or more. Factors that have an impact on how individual cats age include body weight, nutrition, environment, and overall health.

Thanks to advances in veterinary care and improved nutrition, cats are living longer than ever, giving those of us who love them many more years of their affection and warm companionship. This longevity, however, means that senior cats, just like their aging human companions, become more vulnerable to a variety of health issues and ailments: weight gain and decreased mobility; heart, kidney, and liver diseases; diabetes; dental problems and periodontal disease; behavioral problems and cancer.

Though advances in animal care, better nourishment and better educated owners have helped improve the quantity and quality of these years, studies have shown that senior cats continue to fight with weight as the result of reduced activity levels and a steady decline in senses, nutrient absorption and the ability to digest fat.

“One of the most important goals when feeding senior cats is maintaining an ideal weight and keeping that weight stable,” says Dr. Arnold Plotnick, who pioneered a senior wellness program specifically intended to address the unique needs of aging cats at his veterinary hospital, Manhattan Cat Specialists in New York City.

As cats age, there is a steady decline in their body’s capacity to heal itself, maintain standard bodily functions and adjust to tensions in their environment. Illness and weight changes are common during the senior years. Cats are at risk of weight gain in their adult years due to the decline in activity levels and the slowing of their metabolism.

But by the time they reach 11 years of age, weight loss becomes an even bigger concern. The 11-plus years are especially difficult for cats because their sense of smell and taste tend to diminish at this time, which in turn has an adverse affect on their interest in food. The power to absorb key nutritional elements and digest fat begins to declines, making eating itself less efficient.

The unwelcome result is that more food goes straight to becoming waste product, and less is utilized for energy, causing a drop in lean muscle mass and subcutaneous fat, leading to an often dangerous reduction in weight. As well as providing a healthy and well balanced diet, owners of senior cats should closely monitor their cats’ activity levels, weight, food intake, grooming and elimination habits and report anything new or unusual to their veterinarian.

The good news is that owners of senior cats can do a lot to aid their aging felines in the maintenance of an ideal body weight throughout their senior years by feeding them a diet that addresses their unique nutritional needs. For example, holistic cat food, nutrition from all natural products and processes, is one excellent option for boosting the flagging energy of any cat, but especially a senior. Switching to a raw cat food diet as early as possible in your cat’s life will help to keep her golden years much more vibrant and healthy. When it comes the health of your cat, senior food doesn’t have to be any different from the food she’s been eating all along, as long as it was the best and most natural food to begin with.

Though many of the changes in your cat are standard to the aging process we all go through, others may appear that can indicate a much more critical issue. Scheduling veterinary visits at least twice yearly is good practice for older cats as many potentially serious conditions are treatable if detected early. Fortunately, if you started your kitty off from the beginning by giving her the best quality holistic cat food, nutrition alone will have played a significant part in helping her maintain glowing health when she enters her senior years.
